About the Society
The St Sarapion Society of Liturgy in Australia is a collaborative initiative between St Athanasius College (University of Divinity) and St Cyril’s College (Australian University College of Divinity) dedicated to the study, dialogue, and advancement of ancient Christian liturgical traditions in their diverse historical and contemporary expressions, with particular focus on the Egyptian liturgical heritage in conversation with other liturgical traditions.
The Society fosters scholarly research and interdisciplinary engagement, providing a platform for academic publication, collaboration, and exchange. It also facilitates seminars, conferences, and workshops that gather scholars, clergy, and students committed to exploring the depth and beauty of the Church’s liturgical life.
Saint Sarapion
The Society is named after Sarapion of Thmuis, the fourth-century Egyptian bishop, owing to his famous Euchologion—an early collection of liturgical prayers, offering important insights into early Egyptian liturgy.
A friend of St. Athanasius, who supported him during times of exile and doctrinal controversy, and of St. Anthony the Great, Sarapion received one of Anthony’s sheepskin garments as a bequest upon Anthony's death, symbolizing their deep spiritual bond and Sarapion's role as a trusted leader.
